What is PDE5?

Phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors are a class of medications primarily used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) and pulmonary hypertension. They work by blocking the PDE5 enzyme, which helps relax blood vessels and improve blood flow. Common PDE5 inhibitors include:

• Tadalafil (Cialis): Offers the longest duration of action, lasting up to 36 hours.
• Vardenafil (Levitra): Typically takes effect within 60 minutes and lasts up to 12 hours.
• Avanafil (Stendra): A newer option with a faster onset, taking effect in about 15 minutes.

These medications are generally well-tolerated but can have side effects like headaches, flushing, nasal congestion, and muscle aches. They should not be combined with nitrates or certain other medications due to the risk of severe low blood pressure.
